New England Center for Plastic Surgery and Medispa

Nose Surgery

Nose reshaping, or rhinoplasty, is a popular procedure at New England Center for Plastic Surgery and Medispa.  Our Boston plastic surgery specialist, Dr. Marshall, has decades of experience helping Boston rhinoplasty patients with any concerns regarding their facial profiles. To learn more about this procedure, read the paragraphs below.

Rhinoplasty, more commonly known as nose surgery, is a popular procedure that alters the shape, size and/or curvature of the nose to create a more aesthetically appealing look or to correct severe breathing issues. During nose surgery, the size of the nose is reduced by sculpting the nasal tissues and cartilage to match what the Boston rhinoplasty patient desires. Nose surgery helps each rhinoplasty Boston patient achieve unique results and depend upon a variety of factors, including skin condition, genes, age and nasal and facial structure. In the past, nose surgery was only performed in order to correct major issues such as a broken nose. However, recent surgical improvements and advancements allow people desiring a subtle nasal modification to benefit from the procedure as well. Nose surgery provides patients with a more balanced and appealing facial appearance.

Reasons for Considering Nose Surgery:
 - Achieve better proportioned nose and facial features.
 - Reduce the size of noses that are too large or wide.
 - Correct a nose with a large arch.
 - Reshape a crooked or elongated nose tip.
 - Repair broken noses from accidents or sports injuries.
 - Alleviate breathing problems by rebuilding the nasal passage.
 - Repair congenital nasal deformities.

Note:  Some insurance companies may cover the rhinoplasty procedure for patients using the procedure to correct breathing issues.

About Nose Surgery in Boston
The rhinoplasty procedure usually lasts between one to three hours. During the procedure, Dr. Kenneth Marshall, MD, may elect to utilize local or general anesthesia, depending upon how complex the operation is.

The surgery begins with small incisions being made around the nose allowing Dr. Marshall to access underlying nasal muscles and tissues. Once the skin around the nose is opened, the bone and cartilage are reshaped to serve as the foundation of the new nose. Nose surgery normally involves one of two surgical methods – either ‘open’ or ‘closed’ techniques. Using the open technique, the Boston nose surgery specialist is given maximum visibility and is given more control over the procedure. Using the closed technique, there is less external scarring and patients are able to heal faster. Nose surgery Boston patients can learn more about which technique will work best for them during a one-on-one private consultation with Dr. Marshall.

Recovery for Boston Rhinoplasty Patients
Patients are generally given instructions to get plenty of rest following a rhinoplasty procedure in order to speed up the healing process and reduce the time of recovery. While Boston rhinoplasty patients may notice some swelling, it will usually disappear within a few weeks. Immediately following the procedure, a splint, bandages and gauze are applied in order to aid the healing process and keep the nose in place while it heals. Patients may remove these after about one week of use, however, must refrain from smoking for several weeks prior to and following the rhinoplasty procedure. Minor pain and inconvenience may be treated effectively with oral medications and cold compresses. In order to reduce the chances of complications, as rare as they may be, patients should follow post-surgical directions given by Dr. Marshall very closely.

In addition to helping patients seeking nose surgery in Boston achieve elegant, proportionate facial profiles, Dr. Marshall offers a variety of other facial beautification procedures.
