Boston Gynecomastia Surgeon – Dr. Marshall
New England Center for Plastic Surgery and Medispa

Gynecomastia

An acclaimed Boston plastic surgeon with years of experience in breast surgery, Dr. Marshall is routinely visited by men seeking treatment for gynecomastia (enlarged male breasts). While not a serious medical condition, excessive male breasts usually lead to insecurities and low self-esteem in men. Dr. Marshall offers effective gynecomastia treatments that allow his Boston gynecomastia patients to attain a more masculine chest appearance.

Gynecomastia, which affects more than 65 percent of men, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, is characterized by excess, localized fat and/or glandular tissue in one or both breasts. Although the cause of gynecomastia is unknown in many cases, it is often a result of hormonal imbalance, genetics, anti-anxiety medicine and other types of drugs. The most effective treatment for gynecomastia is male breast surgery.

Reasons for Considering Gynecomastia Treatment in Boston

Gynecomastia treatment / male breast reduction surgery allows men to:

» Achieve a flatter, more masculine chest shape

» Improve their self-esteem

» Better fit in male attire without feeling uncomfortable/ashamed

Male breast reduction can be performed through a variety of techniques, depending on the severity level of the condition. The best candidates for the procedure are generally healthy men who are not severely overweight and whose gynecomastia has stabilized. Male Breast Reduction in Boston

Male breast reduction may be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the level of correction needed. If localized fat deposits are the cause, Dr. Marshall may use a liposuction technique to reshape the male breasts. However, if excess glandular tissue is present, surgical excision is often necessary in addition to liposuction.

The procedure generally begins with a small incision in the underarm area or around the nipple. The excess glandular tissue (and sometimes skin) is removed with handheld surgical tools. If liposuction is part of the procedure, a tube (cannula) is inserted into the breast through the same incision and attached to a vacuum pump that suctions out the excess fat. Following the procedure, which takes 60 to 90 minutes, a small drain is inserted into the area to allow excess fluid to drain properly. The incisions are then covered with dressings, and the chest may be wrapped to keep the skin in place.

During your comprehensive gynecomastia consultation, Dr. Marshall will recommend the best gynecomastia treatment for you and go over additional details as well as answer any questions you may have about this procedure.

Recovery Process for Male Breast Reduction Boston Patients

Male reduction surgery is an outpatient procedure. Immediately after surgery and for the next few days patients generally experience mild swelling, bruising and discomfort in the treatment area, all of which can be managed with mild pain medicine. Stitches are usually removed within a week after surgery, and patients are ready to return to work within a few days, depending on their level of comfort and personal preference. Sexual activity, exercise and other physical action that can lead to injury to the treatment area should be avoided for at least three to four weeks, after which most patients are fully recovered. During recovery, Dr. Marshall will closely monitor your progress and guide you through specific aftercare stages to ensure a safe and smooth recuperation.

In addition to performing male breast reduction, Dr. Marshall is a leading Boston liposuction and tummy tuck surgeon. He also performs a range of other body sculpting procedures, including thigh lift, body lift and breast augmentation in Boston. To learn more about these procedures, please visit the respective pages.
